When Every Ton Counts – The Tools Changing Kingpin Service

In heavy-duty workshops, there are certain jobs few technicians look forward to. Replacing kingpins is one of them. Components that have been in place for decades—exposed to weather, road salt, and extreme loads—tend to seize into the structure itself.

Traditionally, the solution has been as obvious as it is time-consuming: disassemble, transport to a shop press, and work with large margins—both in time and physical effort.

But that picture is beginning to change.

A shift in how the job is done

In recent years, development has moved toward bringing the work back to the vehicle. Instead of adapting workflows to the limitations of a shop press, tools are now designed around real workshop conditions.

Wallmek’s kingpin system is a clear example of this shift. With the universal set 03-00031-45T and the hub puller 03-00016-45T, technicians can perform the job directly on the vehicle—right where it stands.

This is not just about convenience. It’s about control. It’s about ergonomics.

Power – applied with precision

Removing a seized kingpin requires force. A lot of force. But just as important is how that force is applied.

With hydraulic systems ranging from 32- to 70-tons, technicians can apply controlled, directional force instead of relying on impact and improvised methods. This reduces the risk of damage to surrounding components and delivers more predictable results.

The 45-ton system has become something of a standard in many workshops—powerful enough for most applications, yet manageable for everyday use. For more extreme cases, 70-ton solutions ensure that even the most stubborn components can be removed.

Less disassembly – more productive workshop time

The difference is especially noticeable in time efficiency.

Where traditional methods often require extensive disassembly and multiple work steps, the same job can now be completed in a more streamlined workflow. The hub puller 03-00016-45T enables removal of hubs and bearings without relocating entire assemblies to a press.

The result: fewer steps, less handling of heavy components—and ultimately a more efficient workshop.

A system rather than a single tool

What was once often a single-purpose solution has evolved into a modular system. Universal sets are combined with hydraulic cylinders, adapters, and brand-specific accessories.

This means the tools don’t just solve one problem—they solve many.

Workshops investing in the system also build flexibility over time. New applications can be covered by adding components, rather than replacing entire tool setups.

Shocking force – when constant force isn’t enough

In some cases, even high hydraulic press force is not sufficient. Rust, oxidation, and micro-movements over time can cause components to seize in a way that static load alone cannot break free.

This is where the impact function comes into play.

By combining constant hydraulic pressure with controlled impacts, a dynamic effect is created within the material. Instead of only pushing against resistance, tension is built up and then released in small increments. The result is that seized kingpins and other press-fit components can be loosened without the need for heat or uncontrolled methods.

It’s not about brute force – it’s about applying the right type of force at the right moment.

In practice, this means:

-Reduced working time in difficult disassembly cases

-Lower stress on tools and surrounding components

-Less need for alternative methods such as heating or cutting

The impact function therefore becomes a critical complement to hydraulics raw force—especially in situations where traditional methods reach their limits.

A changing work environment

Perhaps the most significant change is not technical—but human.

Fewer heavy lifts, less reliance on improvised methods, and a more controlled workflow directly improve working conditions. It reflects a broader trend in the industry, where efficiency and safety increasingly go hand in hand.
